Travel Diary: Cappadocia, Turkey

Updated: Apr 15, 2020

Hey guys!

Last weekend I visited the beautiful region of Cappadocia. We took a road trip from Ankara and were welcomed with an outstanding view of unique rock formations. I got to learn so much about Christianity as well geography and it was such a memorable experience.

Day 1

On our arrival, we went to our hotel- Castle cave hotel and unloaded the car.

Thereafter we had breakfast at a local restaurant and then began our tour by visiting “imagination valley”. This valley had beautiful  enormous rocks whose shapes had been creatively altered by natural erosion. The terrain was very rocky and some places were quite steep so this was such an intensive workout!😂😂

After this, we visited the ancient, charming city of Avanos.  The Red River ( the longest river within Turkey) passes through the city and has a beautiful swaying bridge to cross the river with. In the burning heat of the day we refreshed ourselves with Turkish ice cream or “dondurma”.

Day 2

Cappadocia has two underground cities, but we visited the underground city of Derinkuyu which our tourguide suggested. Derinkuyu has less dust and was less crowded and I would recommend visiting it before peak hours because of the one-way narrow passages. After visiting the underground city, we headed for an open air museum in Goreme where we got to see cave churches and paintings that were more than 2000 years old!

After spending our morning exploring, we had lunch at a local restaurant where I had the Turkish version of loaded fries-it was delicious!

One of my favorite moments from this trip was when this little boy was yelling for people to buy “Cappadocia cherries”. He was such an aggressive salesman( in all the best possible ways) and convinced my mum and I to buy a kilo of cherries! 😂😂😂 We were so amused we asked him if we could take photos with him:

We later learnt that the boy was a Syrian refugee working in a farm. He was so full of energy and left such a great impression on us. Meeting the boy let us see the effects of war on the people’s lives.

After all these activities, to end our visit to Cappadocia, we went to a carpet manufacturer where the carpets were handmade…but EXTREMELY  pricey ranging from USD 900- USD 9000. Handmade carpets are NOT CHEAP!

Overall, it was a great fun trip and I would absolutely recommend visiting Cappadocia if you’re in Turkey.

Have a great week ahead
